Biochar
Biochar from on-site, energy-self-sufficient production for materials, construction products, substrates, and infrastructure projects.
1 tonne of biochar stores up to around 3 tonnes of CO₂ equivalents in the long term (depending on carbon content).
A carbon-rich material
What is biochar?
Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced from biogenic residues through pyrolysis. Plants remove CO₂ from the atmosphere and store the carbon in their biomass. During pyrolysis, this carbon is stabilized at controlled temperatures and converted into a durable form. The result is a porous material with a high surface area that can store carbon for centuries to millennia.
Biochar therefore combines industrial functionality with permanent carbon storage. The principle has been known for centuries: the fertility of the Amazonian Terra Preta soils is linked to the incorporation of charred biomass.

Carbon removal credits from biochar
Biochar stores carbon that plants previously took up from the atmosphere. If it is used permanently and its use is documented, this carbon sink can be marketed as carbon removal credits under recognized standards. One tonne of biochar stores up to around 3 t of CO₂, depending on its carbon content. We support you with certification, documentation and marketing.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions about biochar
01 What is biochar?
Biochar is a carbon-rich material produced from biogenic residues through pyrolysis. The carbon that plants previously absorbed from the atmosphere is converted into a stable form and remains stored for centuries.
02 What is biochar used for?
As a soil improver and substrate additive, as feed-grade biochar and bedding, in tree substrates based on the sponge city principle, as an additive in concrete, asphalt and plastics, and as a filtration and adsorption medium.
03 Is the biochar EBC-certified?
We produce to the requirements of the European Biochar Certificate (EBC) and can cover all EBC classes up to the highest. Which class is reached depends on the residue used. Certification is carried out per production site and batch. You receive analysis values and the current status with your quote.
04 How much does biochar cost per tonne?
The price depends on the EBC class, particle size, processing and volume. We provide prices on request and agree fixed allocations for annual volumes.
05 How long does biochar store carbon?
The stable share of the carbon remains stored for centuries to millennia. The decisive factors are pyrolysis temperature and the H/Corg ratio. Depending on the class, our production is below 0.7 or below 0.4.
06 How are carbon credits generated from biochar?
If biochar is used permanently and its use is documented, the carbon storage can be marketed as carbon removal credits under recognized standards. One tonne of biochar stores up to around 3 t of CO₂, depending on its carbon content.
07 What does biochar have to do with Terra Preta?
Terra Preta is a very fertile dark soil from the Amazon region. Its fertility is largely due to incorporated charred biomass. The principle has been documented for centuries and is the model for today’s soil applications.
08 Can I produce biochar myself?
Yes. With the Pyro-ClinX pyrolysis plant you produce around 75 kg of biochar per hour while generating 150 kW of electricity and up to 450 kW of heat. You can use your own wood residues for this. On request, pyropower takes the biochar off your hands.
