Pyrolysis
Pyro-Hex 1000 produces heat and biochar from woody residues, without power generation.
Pure pyrolysis plant delivering up to 990 kW of process heat and 75 kg of biochar per hour. For sites with a high heat demand that also want to create a CO₂ sink.
Input: Wood chips and woody residues
In use
Process heat and biochar from one plant
Pyro-Hex 1000 replaces fossil heat generation on site with heat from woody residues and produces biochar at the same time. The plant runs continuously and fully automatically; the heat is available as hot water, via thermal oil or as process heat up to 300 °C. The CO₂ sequestered in the biochar is documented and can be certified as a carbon sink.
How it works
How heat and biochar are produced
01 Woody residues
Wood chips G30 to G50 are fed in continuously. Other residues subject to approval.
02 Pyrolysis
In the reactor, biochar and pyrolysis gas are produced in the absence of oxygen.
03 Post-combustion and heat
The pyrolysis gases are post-combusted. A heat exchanger extracts up to 990 kW of heat.
04 Biochar
The biochar is discharged continuously and sequesters carbon permanently as a CO₂ sink.

Core components
Two core components: pyrolysis reactor and heat exchanger
Pyro-Hex 1000 consists of two main assemblies. In the pyrolysis reactor, woody residues are converted into biochar and pyrolysis gas at 650 to 800 °C in the absence of oxygen. The gas is post-combusted at up to 1,200 °C and the heat exchanger transfers the heat to your heating network or process.
No electricity is generated, which keeps the plant simpler in design and optimised for maximum heat output. For sites that also need electricity, pyropower offers Pyro-ClinX, which combines pyrolysis with combined heat and power.
How it works
How Pyro-Hex 1000 works
Residues
Wood chips G30 to G50 are fed in continuously. Other woody residues are possible after approval. A moisture content of up to 25% is permissible, at reduced output.
Pyrolysis
In the reactor, the residues are heated to 650 to 800 °C in the absence of oxygen, producing biochar and pyrolysis gas.
Post-combustion
The pyrolysis gases are fully post-combusted at up to 1,200 °C and supply the high-temperature heat for the heat exchanger.
Heat extraction
A heat exchanger extracts up to 990 kW of heat: as hot water at 90/70 °C, via thermal oil or optionally as process heat up to 300 °C.
Biochar
The biochar is discharged continuously, around 75 kg per hour. It sequesters carbon permanently and can be certified as a carbon sink. The EBC class achieved depends on the feedstock.
Operation
The plant runs around the clock, fully automated, with PLC control and remote maintenance.

Frequently asked questions about the Pyro-Hex 1000 pyrolysis plant
01 What is Pyro-Hex 1000?
Pyro-Hex 1000 is a continuous pyrolysis plant for woody residues. It produces up to 990 kW of heat and around 75 kg of biochar per hour. No electricity is generated; the plant is designed for heat and biochar.
02 How does Pyro-Hex 1000 differ from Pyro-ClinX?
Pyro-Hex 1000 is the pure pyrolysis plant and delivers heat and biochar. Pyro-ClinX combines pyrolysis with an externally fired micro gas turbine and also generates electricity. If your site mainly needs heat, Pyro-Hex 1000 gets you there with less equipment.
03 Which residues are suitable?
The standard feedstock is wood chips G30 to G50 with up to 25% moisture; at higher moisture the output is reduced. We assess other woody residues on request and approve them after analysis.
04 In what form is the heat available?
As standard, as hot water at 90/70 °C via water or water-glycol. Optionally as thermal oil or as process heat up to 300 °C. The heat is extracted via a heat exchanger; the connection to your heating network is designed during project engineering.
05 What is the quality of the biochar?
The biochar is produced at 650 to 800 °C with an EPA16-PAH content below 4 mg/kg according to the EBC method. It is EBC AgroBio capable; the class achieved depends on the feedstock.
06 Can the CO₂ sequestration be certified?
Yes. The plant sequesters around 1,720 t of CO₂ equivalent per year in the biochar. The sink performance is certifiable under C-Sink and is prepared for documentation.
07 How much space does the plant need?
Excluding attachments, Pyro-Hex 1000 measures around 12.0 x 6.5 x 6.3 metres with a mass of about 90 tonnes. Add storage space for wood chips as well as connections to the heat sink and power supply. We plan the installation site-specifically.
08 How does a project proceed?
From the initial potential check through project engineering to commissioning, pyropower accompanies the entire process. The steps are described on our Services page.
